The NHS are introducing summary care records (SCRs), as part of the NHS Care Records Service, to improve the safety and quality of patient care. SCRs will give health-care staff faster, easier access to reliable information about you to help with your treatment.Today, records are kept in all the places where you receive care. These organisations can usually only share information from your records by letter, email, fax or phone. At times, this can slow down treatment and sometimes information can be lost along the way. Now there will be quicker ways to get important information to the NHS staff treating you,
including in an emergency and when you use out-of-hours services when your GP practice is closed. You will have an SCR, which will be available to people providing you
with care anywhere in England. At first, your SCR will contain important information about your health, such as details of any allergies, your current prescriptions
and whether you have had any bad reactions to medicines. After that, each time you use any
NHS health service, we may add details about any health problems, summaries of your care and the professionals treating you to your SCR. As we add new information
to your record, you can discuss what is being added and how sensitive information is handled. We are gradually introducing SCRs across England. We are telling you about this before your SCR is ready, so that you have time to think about your options. If you choose to have an SCR, NHS staff will ask you if they can look at it every time they need to. If you do not want us to make an
SCR for you, you can choose not to have one.
THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN IMMEDIATELY - NHS NORFOLK WILL BE SENDING OUT LETTERS TO EXPLAIN THE PROCESS TO ALL PATIENTS FROM 22 FEBRUARY AND YOU WILL HAVE 12 WEEKS TO DECIDE YOUR OPTIONS .
If you wish, you can find out when this will happen by visiting our website www.norfolk.nhs.uk or by calling the NHS Norfolk PALS team on 0800 5874132.
Get a copy of the leaflets - ‘Your health information,
Confidentiality and the NHS Care Records Service’ and ‘The NHS Care Record Guarantee for England’
For more information about SCRs, phone our NHS Care Records Service Information Line on 0845 603 8510 or contact your local Patient Advice and Liaison Service
(PALS). Ask your local NHS for details or visit www.pals.nhs.uk.
You can also get more information at ww.nhscarerecords.nhs.uk,
including information about all of the options in this leaflet.

HPV vaccination Maureen Carson, NHS Norfolk’s Director of Women and Children’s Commissioning and Chief Nurse, said: “With respect to this tragic case, as yet, we don’t know that it is in any way connected to the child receiving the HPV vaccination and we should not prejudge the investigation, which is already underway.“In more general terms, we can say that any untoward effects and deaths caused by vaccinations are extremely rare; and we must remember the hugely positive outcomes of delivering an important vaccination programme such as this.”In the UK, about 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and about 1,000 die from the disease.Between September 2008 and July 2009 (one school year) just over 6,500 girls received the all three doses required for full immunisation in the NHS Norfolk area. NHS Norfolk commissioned delivery of the vaccines in schools from Norfolk Community Health & Care (NCH&C), with some catch-up vaccines delivered by GPs in the area. “In the meantime, NHS Norfolk will continue to deliver its HPV vaccination programme and we would like to reassure parents and young women that this programme is closely and routinely monitored, and is delivered by professional and experienced healthcare providers,” added Mrs Carson.Department of Health Statement:Public Health Minister Gillian Merron said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the family. It is important we have the results of further investigations as soon as possible to establish the cause of this sad event." DH spokesperson said: “Being able to protect young women against this disease is a tremendous development. The vaccine has been rigorously tested and a million doses have now been given in the UK with no new risks emerging. "The Cervarix vaccine has passed the rigorous safety testing needed for it to be used in the UK and other European countries. The vaccine has a strong safety record. Several million doses of the vaccine have been given around the world, and more than 1.4 million doses have now been given in the UK.”Further Information:A general information and advice line on the vaccine is available on 0845 602 3303.If parents or young people are still worried about the safety of any vaccine they should speak to their GP to discuss their concerns, or visit www.immunisation.nhs.ukwhere they can find more information about all vaccinations routinely given to children and young people.

Medical Students – Ladies are you able to help us?
Are you able to spare an hour on a Monday afternoon between 2-3pm?
Are you willing to discuss your medical history with a pair of 4th year medical students?
Would you be willing to discuss with them, any of the following, your birth experiences, hormonal problems, periods, breast problems, contraception methods or sexual health with the students? (they won’t be examining you)
This is the second year Dr Singh and Dr Bindel have supervised the medical student program with the UEA medical school.Last year the patients who kindly gave up their time found it a very positive experience. The students will then meet with you in one of our consulting rooms and prompt discussion by asking you questions.Last year the feedback from the students was that meeting the patients to take their histories was the part of their time that they found most useful and enjoyable and the students and the partners were very grateful for the time that people took with them.
If you feel that you are able to help please call Annette at the surgery on 01603 777909.

Support your surgery! ( posted on Oct 24, 2008 )
Did you know there is a serious threat to general practice?
ALTHOUGH IT'S HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY TO NHS GENERAL PRACTICE
we need our patients support - for 60 years local GP surgeries have been providing the personalised care that you and your family need close to home by people who know you and your health.
But we are very worried that new Government plans to change the way in which GP services are provided will put at risk the comprehensive, high-quality patient care your local surgery provides.
